Updated June 2026 · How we choose

Wooden toys are already a safer choice than many plastics, but "wooden" alone does not guarantee non-toxic. The finish and paint matter most, especially for babies who mouth everything. Here is what to look for.

Check the finish, not just the wood

The safest finishes are untreated wood, food-grade oils (linseed, mineral) or beeswax, and water-based, lead-free paints. These are what you want on anything a baby will chew.

Look for real certifications

Reassuring marks include EN71 (Europe) and ASTM F963 (US) toy-safety standards, plus FSC-certified sustainable wood. Brands like Plan Toys, Hape and Grimm's are explicit about their non-toxic finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Are all wooden toys non-toxic?

No. The wood is usually fine, but cheap paints or varnishes can contain unwanted chemicals. Look for water-based, lead-free paint or food-grade oil and beeswax finishes, and recognised safety certifications.
