Wooden toys are easy to keep clean and last for decades with a little care. The one rule: never soak them. Here is how to clean, disinfect and refresh wooden toys safely.

Everyday cleaning

Wipe with a cloth dampened in warm water and a little mild soap, then dry right away. Do not submerge wooden toys or put them in the dishwasher, as soaking warps and cracks the wood and lifts the finish.

Disinfecting safely

For a natural disinfectant, wipe with a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution, or a damp cloth with a drop of mild soap, then dry. Avoid bleach on toys that will be mouthed.

Restoring tired wood

If a toy looks dry or faded, a thin rub of food-grade mineral oil, beeswax or a beeswax-and-oil polish brings the grain back to life and re-seals it. Buff off the excess.
